Meet Dr. Jennifer Harris

BIO

Dr. Jennifer Harris is a trauma-informed pastoral counselor with extensive experience in church leadership, theology, and teaching. She   holds graduate degrees in theology and pastoral counseling, which form her unique approach to story work at the intersection of theology and psychology (see more below about theory and methodology).

Additionally, Jennifer has several certifications in trauma-informed narrative care (story work), resilient leadership and service, communication, and embodied emotional healing techniques.

She has been certified in Narrative Focused Trauma Care through the Allender Center at the Seattle School of Theology & Psychology and has completed the Certificate in Resilient Service program at the Seattle School of Theology & Psychology. Jennifer is also a certified Essential Emotions coach, which uses the olfactory process to release deeply rooted stories and memories through neurochemistry through guided methodology, emotional awareness, embodiment, and essential oils. Lastly, she is an Enneagram teacher and trained in Non-Violent Communication techniques.

A personal note: I have lived life on this planet and have thus experienced my own themes of trauma through family dysfunction, spiritual crisis and abuse, and the challenges of being in a body on this planet.  I am walking the path of story work, and I am honored to walk alongside you on that path, too. I'll be your flashlight, your story sherpa, and your mirror through the dark places on your journey back to the peace found in the light of grace.

Our theory of story work: WHOLE STORY LIVING

My Approach

Whole Story Counseling uses a narrative processing approach that encourages you to become your own storyteller in pursuit of wholeness.

That wholeness is characterized by the intersection of our past, present, and future story.

We seek to join you as you begin to uncover and reconnect the whole story of who you are: where you have come from, where you are now, and where you are going.

Whole Story Living

To assist our story journey, we apply the principles of Whole Story Living. This is my theory of story work. These principles are the intersection of theology and psychology, of theory and practice, and of past and future because they guide intentional choices lived out in real time in the real world.

Whole Story Living is:

Pursuing the Whole-istic Desire for Goodness and Connection.

Check out the Blog Page for the Whole Story Living Series to learn more about these principles.

DISCOVER YOUR STORY OF HEALING

PURSUING THE PAST: CURIOSITY FOR WHERE WE'VE COME FROM

We are a complex system of stories

that have formed desires, beliefs, and patterns of behavior.

We learned these stories very young and very well.

Understanding these overlapping stories and how they self-protect against new ways of being and behavior is the key to understanding ourselves and finding space to imagine new stories, new responses to old stories, and counteract the stress and anxiety of the internal identity struggle within our hearts, minds, and body.

We are freed to pursue our true desires for goodness and connection.

PURSUING THE PRESENT: KINDNESS FOR WHERE WE ARE NOW

You have made it this far.

You are both wounded and resilient.

We  honor those less healthy ways of functioning for how they protected you in the past AND release them to create space for new responses to today's reality with healthier ways of living.

You begin to imagine new choices for your future because your desires are being set free from harm in the present moment.

You are pursuing wholeness by reconnecting  exiled pieces of yourself

and finding that your desire for goodness and connection is growing.

PURSUING THE FUTURE: COURAGE FOR WHERE WE ARE GOING

The good news is that new ways are possible.

Change is possible.

With practice, the brain forms new pathways,

the body learns new patterns, and together,

they support new ways of responding to the stresses of life.

Courage will inspire you to take these new ways into your

future relationships, work, and your own continuing story.

Goodness and connection are becoming friends and allies on our journey to the future, freed from the marring of the past.

We think in story all day long, filtering new information through past experiences (stories) to assign meaning, which becomes our belief, which then informs our behavior. Change this "old story" filter, and we change our life.

Jennifer's story

We are all more than our bio or resumé.

Since you will (hopefully!) choose to share your story with me, it's only right that I share some of my story with you. Since I love to communicate, it's a little longer than a "normal" bio on a website might be, so it's a blog post that you can easily find here.

my promise

I promise to walk with you in humility, authenticity, and truthfulness.

I promise to listen well and responsively.

I promise to hold your story in confidence.

I promise to honor the time boundaries we set in advance.

I promise to never push you where you choose not to go.

I promise that I will probably get it wrong at some point.

When that happens, I promise that I will name it and seek to repair the rupture.

I promise on the other side will be a new level of connection and story work.
